Jim's Trip to Rainbow Springs Florida April, 2006

This ultra-clear water is from the spring-fed Rainbow River, the purest, most pristine river in the United States. It's got 150 ft. horizontal visibility! It's 100% spring fed and has all kinds of interesting caves to discover as you float downstream with mask and snorkel. The problem is, as soon as you stick your head into a cave, you get blasted with the spring water rushing out at a high rate of speed. There is an abundance of fish, turtles, birds, etc., that makes for a spectacular snorkeling experience as you float down the river.

What you're seeing here is Rainbow Springs State Park, which comprises the headsprings of the Rainbow River.
This is where the river starts.

This is downtown Ocala, which is where I spent the night. It's about 20 minutes from Rainbow Springs

Here is a part of old Florida, away from the tourist traps and beaches. This is downtown Arcadia, which is about an hour inland from Sarasota. The town is now essentially a ghost town since the new super-Walmart was built on the outskirts of town.
