Sweet 660 mile ride through the mountains of PA on August 12 and 13, 2006 with the ultimate destination being the 'Bucktail Trail,' named for a regiment of rangers in the Civil War era, which runs through the Sproul and Elk State Forests for 100 glorious miles.

On the way to PA

I roughly followed the Genesee Valley to the PA line. This is County Route 15 which runs to Angelica. It's particularly scenic.

Historic Wellsville

It's a nice town along Rt. 19 in New York south of the Southern Tier Expressway and north of the PA line.

Next Stop: PA

Just getting from Rochester to the PA line is a fantastic ride in and of itself.

Potter County, PA

It's known generally as God's Country in these here parts.

Genesee River Source

I followed the Genesee almost to it's source, then headed west on PA Rt. 6

Sunflowers

No Helmet Law!

I almost pulled a 'Ben Rothlisberger' while holding my helmet in one hand and taking a picture of myself in the other while doing 60mph.

No Helmet Law!

My new cruise control = two hands free and ability to take pictures while riding

No Helmet Law!

I love riding without a helmet, but PA should have a special amendment to force idiots like me to wear one.

I like these old bridges.

Port Allegheny, PA

Yet another quaint town along PA Route 6 between Smethport and Coudersport.

Kinzua Dam

Near Warren, PA, the Kinzua Dam forms the Allegheny reservoir.

Kinzua Dam

This sign paints a pretty picture. It doesn't mention the ugly tale of the 1964 forced eviction of 537 Seneca Indians from a third of their reservation in a blatant violation of the Pickering Treaty of 1794

Allegheny Reservoir

Just above the Kinzua Dam, this whole area is rife with beauty. I'd like to go back and explore the reservoir with my boat. Pictured here is just one small section.

Longhouse Scenic Drive

This runs along the western edge of the Allegheny Reservoir. It's a nice and twisty road.

Scenic drives everywhere

Southern tip of Allegheny Reservoir

This is where an old road slips beneath the waters of the reservoir. You can still see old road signs sticking up. People lived here for centuries until it was buried under millions of gallons of water in 1964.

Allegheny National Forest

is a beautiful thing

View of Bradford, PA

Where I spend the night at the Best Western. Highly recommended - and cheap too!

The pastor, a nice and socialable person, poses in front of his church.

Spring Water

Locals collecting spring water from a mountain spring. I stopped and got some too.

East Branch Lake

Another beautiful reservoir. I saw it on my GPS and decided to check it out. I'm glad I did.

Elk Range

The original Pennsylvania Elk species became extinct in 1867. Elk were reintroduced in the early 1900's from the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone and South Dakota.

Route 555

It's a sweet road that must not be missed!

The Bucktail Trail

... aka, Rt. 120, is a scenic drivewhich follows the Susquehanna River Valley and then Sinnamehoning Creek.

You must ride this road at least once. It's totally sweet.

Again from Hyner Mountain, you can see the Bucktail Trail as it meanders along the sinuous Susquehanna.
